HOW TO PAINT WOOD
Wood has a natural beauty that is usually enhanced by the use of transparent coatings called varnishes. Wood needs to be protected from damage by water, sunlight and abrasion. Various products are available for different end-uses:
1. Promac Goodwood Varnish Gloss finish is available in standard colours. It contains UV light absorbers and linseed oil to afford superior wood
protection.
2. Promac Goodwood 30 Preservative Suede finish is available in standard colours. It is a UV-resistant, deeply penetrating oil-based wood preservative,
as well as being water repellent with insecticidal properties. Its carefully selected blend of resin, oil and wax preserve and protect the timber from within.
3. Solid colour Promac Pro Silk Non-Drip Enamel is a medium-sheen acrylic with excellent exterior durability.
Surface preparation:
This is the critical part of any painting project as poor preparation is the principal cause of coating failure. The objective of surface preparation is to strengthen the surface before applying any paint. The recommended necessary steps are as follows:
1. Sand the surface, in the direction of the grain, using successively finer abrasive papers. A sanding sealer will improve the quality of the resultant finish.
2. Remove dust by wiping the surface with a damp (not wet) lint-free cloth.
Paint application
1. Clear varnishes: Apply selected varnish to the surface, leave to cure overnight, and then apply a second coat. Brushing is the preferred method.
Further coats may be required over porous soft wood (such as SA pine).
2. Solid colour topcoats (enamels): Apply Promac Wood Primer using a brush or roller. Leave to cure overnight then lightly sand the surface before
applying Promac Universal Undercoat. Lightly sand the undercoat and dust off. Apply the selected enamel topcoat and leave to cure overnight. For
optimum appearance a second topcoat can be applied.
3. Solid colour top coats (acrylics): Apply Promac Wood Primer using a brush or roller. Leave to cure overnight then lightly sand the surface before
applying selected acrylic topcoat and leave to cure for at least four hours. For optimum appearance a second topcoat can be applied.
Other important information
1. Never apply paint if rain is forecast, or expected, during the day of application.
2. Apply paint after 08h00 (summer) or 10h00 (winter) to ensure that the roof is not too cold or damp.
3. To avoid excessive roof temperatures and to allow the paint to harden sufficiently before any afternoon rain may occur, painting before 12h00 is
recommended.
4. To reduce colour variations always use the same batch number for touch-up work, which may otherwise be visible on the painted roof.
